Business Priorities

Updating your business priorities never goes out of style. As a business leader, it is your responsibility to ensure all your employees understand what the yearly business priorities are. It’s also your responsibility to help each individual understand how their work supports the annual business priorities.

These are three areas you can start to update your annual business priorities:

1. Invest in your leadership team by ensuring they are trained in leading and coaching employees as well as interviewing any potential new hires. Top performing companies have one thing in common – outstanding leaders. When you invest in your leadership team it can increase your top and bottom line. If you don’t have the funds to develop your own formal leadership program, consider monthly training as a leadership group. Most consulting firms and coaching firms can help craft a program that is specific to your business need and budget.

2. Create or refresh your Talent Management process. The talent management process consists of managing employee performance. If you have high performing employees come up with ways to help them develop additional skills. If you have low performing employees, find out where they are struggling and help them get back on track. Ultimately you want to know how every employee is performing in your organization so you can support them to move up or support them to find another work opportunity outside your organization if it’s warranted.

3. Lastly, implement the Three Question session with your leadership team, then have them implement it with their direct reports. These are short weekly meetings that each leader has with their direct reports each week to stay on top of any work-related or project issues or gather other great ideas your employees have about how to support the business priorities.

All these areas are key in building a strong business but remember, employees are your business. If you take care of them, they will take care of the business and your clients. Happy employees’ equal happy profits.
